Beat the Heat and Crunch

As I write this, we are in the middle of the hottest weather we have ever experienced in this country. Yesterday my car registered 40 degrees and getting out of the air-conditioned vehicle was like stepping into a furnace. The phone has been ringing nonstop with fridge and freezers going down. As I mentioned last month hot weather and refrigeration isn’t compatible!

Remember to avoid opening the doors unnecessarily to keep the cold air in, and use the super freeze function when you put new food in. Avoid defrosting and cleaning during very hot weather too. A customer this week cleaned hers and it couldn’t get back to temperature again.

Its great to be able to get the washing out on the line, but often when it dries quickly in the heat it dries stiff. It’s worth putting dry clothes on a cold setting in the tumble dryer for a few minutes to soften them up. Another reason for clothes drying stiff is soap residue. To help with this put a couple of tablespoons of white vinegar in the fabric softener compartment. The clothes wont smell but they won’t have soap residue left in them. For clothes that smell fusty it may be a build-up of soap residue that has allowed bacteria to grow. You can soak these in a weak solution of white vinegar and then wash normally. We’ve discovered that plain old washing powder is the best to avoid some of these problems. For all the pods, capsules and sheets we can get nowadays, sometimes the old things are the best!
