‘Take your ‘clout’!

‘Ne’er Cast a Clout till May be out’, was a saying my Scottish Grandmother, who lived with us, would say to me whenever she saw me preparing to go out without my coat in May. An ancient rhyme that could easily have referred to the May blossom which is so prolific in our green and pleasant land, but she was determined it was an outer garment to keep you warm. And she was quite often right as the weather can fluctuate so much in May. I remember snow falling when we were on a canal boat one May bank holiday.

Yes, I have put washing on the line once so far this year! The tumble dryer has been used more than it should and sometimes the house looks like Widow Twanky’s! So how can we dry our clothes without spending lots of money!

The tumble dryer market is changing dramatically with many manufacturers only producing Heat Pump Driers, which have improved greatly since their debut in the market a few years ago. They work by absorbing moisture from the wet clothes using warm air. This is then reheated to returned to the drum. This allows efficient drying that can cost up to 50% less than conventional dryers. It is also much gentler on the clothes as it operates at a lower temperature. The downside is they take much longer to dry. But maybe we all need to live a little more slowly!
