Cooker Care Tips

November 1, 2025

This time of year is always when cooker season begins. By that I mean we get lots of calls for cookers, ovens and hobs as Christmas comes onto our radar.  There are some simple things you can do to look after your cooking appliances that will help lengthen their lives and their operation.  The most important thing is the most obvious, give them a good clean. Now these days most newer ovens will have some sort of cleaning programme on them. Pyrolytic ovens heat up to a very high temperature and burn off the soiling, so if you have one of these run the programme. Don’t forget to wipe out the ash when its finished and the oven has cooled down to a safe temperature.

Other ovens have an Easy Clean programme where you place a dish of water in the base with a little washing up liquid in and this will soften the dirt and make it easier to clean off.

Older ovens may have Catalytic liners which absorb the grease, but even these need cleaning. You can remove and wash in a weak solution of washing powder, then rinse thoroughly and pat dry before replacing.

And if your oven has no cleaning programme there are lots of good oven cleaning products in our supermarkets. But be careful as some are caustic.

To minimise soiling line your shelves and even cover your meat when cooking, although it’s not great for crispiness. But covering with foil and taking off for the last 20 minutes helps.

Wiping the oven cavity out after each is great, but it’s not always realistic!  And don’t leave greasy pans in the oven as it cools down. Not only will they create a smell, but they will accelerate fat burning on to the oven.

Hobs need to be kept clean, and any burnt-on spillages can be removed using a good hob cleaner like Hob Brite. You can also buy special hob scrapers for stubborn spills.
